Over the years there have always been a number of locomotives in storage at various locations around the UK but following privatisation of the British Railway's network from the mid 1990s onwards the number of locomotives in storage has increased dramatically. Besides several operators having opted for new build or re-engineered replacements for the traction they inherited from British Rail there has been a general slowing down of disposals whilst individual operators have assessed and re-deployed their assets.
