Three Rivers

(Philadelphia-Pittsburgh-Chicago) It's a spectacular journey that starts underneath one river (you tunnel under the Hudson as you depart from New York City) and ends up between three others (in Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle, between the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers). In between, you'll see everything from the gleaming, modern skylines of downtown New York and Pittsburgh to the gently rolling hills and fertile farmland of Pennsylvania Dutch country. But it's the mountains of western Pennsylvania you'll remember. There, the Three Rivers and the Pennsylvanian travel through some of the most spectacularly dramatic scenery in the east. You'll see marvels of engineering that match the scenery: the famous Horseshoe Curve, where the tracks wind around in a full half-circle; the Gallitzin tunnels, piercing the summit of the Allegheny mountains; the site of the historic Johnstown flood.
