The Vienna metro ("U-Bahn") system has a long history. Although the new metro was only opened in 1976, some of its routes have been in use for a considerably longer time: converted "Stadtbahn" (Metropolitan Railway), built 1894-1901, first opened in 1898 converted underground tramway, built 1963-1965, first opened in 1965 newly-built metro, built from 1969 onwards, first opened in 1978.
