Georgia - The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History

Kennesaw, GA - The Museum is home to the Rodgers, Ketchum & Grosvenor (1855 -Patterson,N.J.) locomotive known as the General, made famous by the Civil War Great Locomotive Chase. The museum sits within 100 feet of where the General was stolen, next to one of the busiest railroad lines in the country (100 trains/day). There is a 1904 L&N depot and a full scale locomotive factory (the Glover Machine Shop)that operated from circa 1880 thru 1995. The company manufactured locomotives from 1900 thru 1930+. The museum's locomotive assembly line is belt driven and has original restored machinery from 1860 thru 1900 in place along the assembly line. The archives recently acquired the Southern Railway Archives some 6,000 cubic feet of railroad history from 1880 to 1980. The museum is in the process of adding a new railroad education center and additional archives storage facilities. Ya'll come on down and visit a spell.
