Ffestiniog Railway - Guest Driving
United Kingdom - The Ffestiniog Railway offers the possibility for a limited number of guests to enjoy the thrill of the hallowed ground that is the driver's side of an FR footplate.
With a steeply graded 13-mile route and well maintained locomotives, the FR represents an unparalleled driving challenge. Our guest drivers can choose a driving package that suits them, starting with more easily handled Penrhyn Lady Class locomotives through to the ultimate challenge of handling one of the famous FR double Fairlies hauling 10 carriages.

Fort Wayne RHS - Engineer for an Hour
New Haven, IN - We have started an "Engineer for an Hour" program using our 44-ton Davenport diesel. This is the same locomotive that we use to move our equipment in and out of the shop. The program begins with an hour of general instruction on railroading, air brake operation, and diesel locomotive operation. Then you will move to the cab of the diesel, to become familiar with the control stand in our diesel. Once you're checked out on the controls, it’s time to get ready to roll.

The Wolsztyn Experience - Rannoch Adventures
Poland - Steam Locomotive Driving on PKP Polish National Railways
The Wolsztyn Experience is a British company operating in tandem with a charitable trust in western Poland, near the German border. The small, picturesque town of Wolsztyn is the center of steam rail operations conducted by the PKP, the national railroad system of Poland. Wolsztyn is one of several towns in the area where a roundhouse and maintenance facilities are maintained for steam locomotives. This is literally the last steam-hauled mainline train service in Europe and among the last in the world. Wolsztyn Experience provides financial assistance to support this attraction by providing driving courses to individual in conjunction with its regular passenger and freight service.
This is an unparalleled experience. Students actually experience on-the-job training under master "machinists" (engineers and firemen) in a scheduled rail environment. This is not a preserved railway. It is scheduled mainline service and you spend the majority of your time on the engine sitting in the right-hand seat under the careful guidance of the engineer.
