The Adelaide Darwin Railway - The AustralAsia Railway Project was predicated on the provision of a competitive freight service that will deliver benefits to all Australians and ensure the ongoing viability of the line. The commencement of FreightLink's commercial services coincided with the official launch of the first FreightLink freight train to run from Adelaide on 15 January 2004, arriving in Darwin on 17 January.

In 1997, GWI Australia Pty. Ltd. (GWA) acquired the assets of Australian National's freight rail business in the state of South Australia from the Commonwealth of Australia and created Australia Southern Railroad (ASR), a wholly owned subsidiary of GWA. ASR's predecessor incurred substantial losses in 1996--yet, on the first day of operations, ASR turned the business into a profitable enterprise. Our new management team made some immediate changes to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of operations. With union support, all ASR employees are enrolled in a profit-sharing program.

The company was privatized in March 1996 and is owned 50% by pension funds on behalf of the Bolivian people. The Oriental connects the rich agricultural center surrounding Santa Cruz and the natural gas producing region of southern Bolivia with Argentina to the south, Brazil to the east, and to world markets through transloading shipments onto barges operating within the Hidrovia, a primary system of waterways extending to export terminals in Uruguay and Argentina.
