The Birth of California's Narrow Gauge Railroads
"Promoting the Discussion of the History, Development, and Preservation
of Narrow Gauge Railroads in California" The name of this page comes from the proposed title of a new book by Bruce MacGregor. The
book will cover the beginnings of California's narrow gauge movement, tracing the first six lines
built - the Monterey and Salinas Valley, the Santa Cruz Railroad, the Santa Cruz and Felton, the
Santa Clara Valley, the North Pacific Coast, and the Nevada County Narrow Gauge. A common
thread found tying together all these efforts is the presence of Thomas and Martin Carter and
their company, the Carter Brothers.

The Narrow Gauge Circle
Narrow Gauge Circle - Colorado Narrow Gauge. While we can't experience the "Around the Circle" tour in our time we can follow many of the routes the little trains traveled over 100 years ago. The Narrow Gauge Circle is offered in an attempt to recreate the thrilling journey enjoyed by those lucky early day travelers. In addition, I have included the history of many of the other notable narrow gauge railroads that threaded their way through the magnificent mountains of Colorado. We are fortunate to have the exclusive use of Mr. Ted Kierscey's extensive collection of historical photographs from Colorado's past.

Uintah Railway
The narrow gauge Uintah Railway was built in 1904 to haul gilsonite (a coal like mineral) from the mines in Eastern Utah to Mack, Colorado where it was transferred to the standard gauge Rio
Grande Western Railway. It featured some of the sharpest curves and some of the steepest grades in railroading history, and traversed a 8,437 foot mountain divide.

White Pass & Yukon Route Resources
The purpose of this web site is to document the recent events with particular attention to the railroad. I hope this site will serve as a
sample of a WP&YR excursion for visitors, as a site covering many of the rare or unique events that occur, as a source of information or photos for the railfan, and finally as an inside look at the WP&YR from the train agent's perspective.
