Maine - Boothbay Railway Village - Engineer’s Society New
Boothbay, ME - Engineer’s Society: Put Yourself at the Throttle!

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to operate a steam locomotive! Have you dreamed of putting your hand on the throttle of an authentic steam locomotive? The Boothbay Railway Village is announcing a brand new experience called the Engineer’s Society which allows guests to do just that!

Work directly with our Chief Engineer, learning one on one about the operation of the steam locomotive. Your ground course will cover basic railroad and steam locomotive safety, as well as basic steam locomotive theory and operation.

Following the instruction, each student climbs aboard and operates one of the Museum’s Henschel steam locomotives under the direct and constant supervision of our Chief Engineer for approximately thirty minutes. Your family is encouraged to take pictures as you approach the station “at the throttle!”

Maine - Boothbay Railway Village - Steam School New
Boothbay, ME - Steam School

The Boothbay Railway Village occasionally conducts a two-day course, generally on the third weekend in October, on the operation and theory of the coal-fired steam locomotive. Included in this unique experience is the opportunity to participate in “hands-on” training with the Museum’s vintage locomotives under the supervision of qualified Museum staff.

The course is open to both novices and those who already have some experience or knowledge of steam locomotives.

The class format is a one-day classroom session of theory and understanding, followed by a day of actual locomotive operation. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for those interested in steam engines and steam railroading.

New Hampshire - J.E. Henry Railway at Loon Mountain New
Lincoln, NH - J.E. Henry Railway at Loon Mountain

Learn to Operate the Steam-Powered J.E. Henry Railway at Loon Mountain If you've ever dreamed of conducting a steam locomotive, then Loon's Guest Engineer Program was made for you.

The Guest Engineer Program gives train enthusiasts a chance to learn all about Loon's German-built 0-4-0T engine, which runs along the resort's J.E. Henry Railroad. The railroad, which shuttles skiers and snowboarders 600-feet between its two main base lodges every winter, harkens back to the narrow-gauge logging trains that ran through New Hampshire's White Mountains more than a century ago. Originally built to burn coal, the engine was retrofitted to burn wood when it came to Loon in the 1970s.
