Engineer Experience Programs

North Carolina - N.C. Transportation Museum New
Spencer, NC - At the Throttle: Steam allows you to climb into the cab and operate an authentic steam locomotive, rolling down the tracks at the N.C. Transportation Museum and historic Spencer Shops.

No previous locomotive experience is required. The program is a unique opportunity for rail fans to live their dream of running a steam engine, taking a trip back in time to the golden age of railroading.

A qualified engineer will be in the cab at all times, but participants will enjoy a full half hour operating the engine (following a safety orientation), take home a certificate and a souvenir hat.

A diesel version of the program is also available, see their website for details.

Indiana - Whitewater Valley Railroad New
South Connersville, IN - The Whitewater Valley Railroad is proud to announce Throttle Time. The general public will be offered a chance to operate one of many historic diesel-electric locomotives on the Whitewater Valley Railroad main line as a guest engineer.

Each guest engineer will participate in a brief operational training session before sitting at the throttle for 30 minutes of actual hands-on locomotive operations. The locomotive will operate "light", without attached train cars. Operation will begin with a walk-around inspection and orientation to the locomotive, followed by basic instruction on safety, operation, starting and stopping. The instructor will then take the locomotive to an appropriate location along the track where the guest engineer will take over the locomotive's controls.
