Golden Valley Light Railway - Steam Footplate Experience Days ^New
Experience a day out on the footplate of steam loco 0-4-2 IST "Joan", light the fire and prepare the engine for a trip down the line. Hook up to a rake of coaches, set off down the line and be an engine driver for the day.

It's just you and our expert instructor on the footplate for the day, so if you are not driving, you will be firing. Activities on your day out will include full training, from how to use a steam injector to climbing one of our steep banks hauling a full train.

The day out may be a gift or birthday present, but it will be an adventure to remember, experience the smell and sound of a steam locomotive in steam, which you have been the one to fire and drive, pulling 4 coaches, the full length of a NG railway line.

Severn Valley Railway - The Steam Experience ^New
The Steam Experience - These courses give you the opportunity to drive a large standard gauge railway locomotive under the supervision of qualified staff on one of the country’s premier preserved railways. Three levels of steam courses are available, each of which is designed to meet the aspirations of those interested in the operation of steam locomotives. There is also a diesel course using selected examples of our unique fleet of diesel locomotives.

The steam locomotives used on the course are usually ex-GWR or ex-LMS tender engines. Diesels locomotives include both diesel electric and diesel hydraulic types.

All courses are either morning or afternoon half day courses starting at Bewdley and travelling to Bridgnorth and return (via Kidderminster in the case of the Supreme course and winter introductory courses). Participants' guests, including children aged five years of age and over, can be accommodated on steam courses.

East Lancashire Railway - Footplate Experience Days ^New
Ever wanted to be a train driver, here is your opportunity. Footplate Days are a unique experience that let you come up close with some real power.

Running on specific Mondays and Fridays throughout the year, participants will spend a full day with our ex-British Railways diesel or steam locomotives and lovingly restored carriages and wagons as well as go on a behind-the-scenes tour of our large locomotive works or Diesel depot, Bury South Signal Box (one of the largest mechanical signal boxes in the UK), our carriage & wagon workshops and the Metrolink bridge.

There are four Footplate Experience packages to choose from: •Steam
•Steam Freight
•Diesel
•Diesel Freight

Lunch is being provided as part of each package and you will receive your very own certificate signed by the crewmen at the end of your Footplate Experience.

By taking part in the Footplate Experience you will also automatically become a member of the ELRPS which includes numerous benefits such as three free railway rides a year.

Mid Hants Railway - Advanced Footplate Experience ^New
There is nothing quite like the sound, smell and power of a steam locomotive in full cry! Thanks to our steeply graded line, 1 in 60 at its steepest, you can drive a steam train in the manner it was designed for.

This really is the ultimate footplate experience! Starting at 9am on selected Fridays at Alresford station, you will be in control of one of our larger steam locomotives hauling a train of carriages along the full length of our steeply graded line.

Under the expert instruction of our highly experienced crew, you will be paired with another participant to take turns as both driver and fireman during the day, completing a 10 mile trip in each role.

When not on the footplate you will assist the guard, help with coupling and other areas of importance. As you are able to invite up to 3 guests to travel on the train during your experience, you will also have the opportunity to join them on board the train for refreshments.

A lunch is provided for the participant in the West Country buffet at Alresford station.

Whilst this is our advanced experience, it can be attended by ‘first timers’ too!

St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad (SL&A) ^New
The St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad (SL&A) operates over 260 miles of contiguous mainline track between Portland, Maine and Ste. Rosalie, Québec.

The SL&A crosses the international border at Norton, Vermont and interchanges with the Canadian National Railway (CN) at Ste. Rosalie. We serve various warehouse distribution, intermodal, and bulk transloading facilities throughout New England and the eastern townships of Québec.

Operating over 164 miles of track, the SL&A provides a key transportation link through the northern New England communities of Lewiston/Auburn, Mechanic Falls, and South Paris, Maine; Berlin and Groveton, New Hampshire; and Island Pond, Vermont. In Québec, we deliver the same world-class service with the St. Lawrence & Atlantic (Québec) to the surrounding townships of Coaticook, Sherbrooke, Bromptonville, Windsor and Richmond, Québec. The St. Lawrence and Atlantic (Québec) operates over 96 miles of track between the U.S. border and Ste. Rosalie.

We have a dedicated management team based in Auburn, Maine and Richmond, Québec, enabling the SL&A to provide personalized service to customers systemwide and on both sides of the U.S./Canada border. The 35-acre Maine Intermodal Terminal, part of the CN intermodal network, allows us to offer the only northern New England double-stack container service, complemented by domestic trailer service to both local and intermodal customers.

Through our link with CN, we serve five deep-water ports including Vancouver, British Columbia; Montréal, Québec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Mobile, Alabama. In addition, the SL&A connects to Pan Am Railways (PAR) at Danville Junction, Maine, providing direct rail links to many of the paper mills in Maine and points south through CSX Corporation (CSX) and Norfolk Southern (NS). We connect to the New Hampshire & Vermont Railroad (NHVT) at Groveton, New Hampshire
