American Experience: Streamliners (PBS)

Using beautiful period footage and photographs -- some of which have been held in private collections and never viewed by the public -- and interviews with the men and women who rode and worked on the rails, Streamliners uncovers the dramatic story of the rise and fall of an American passenger rail system that was the envy of the world. The film paints a vivid portrait of the men whose creativity and determination produced the streamliner, chronicles the tremendous impact the trains had on the U.S. during the 1930s, and explores the reasons why postwar America turned its back on the world's best passenger rail system.
This site features info on the film, including a transcription and resources, additional features, interviews with the director, a photo gallery, people and events and other items related to the story of Streamliners in America.

Chapel Cars of America
Chapel Cars of America, thirteen churches-on-rails that followed the railroads west from 1890 to the 1940s and brought the gospel and the sacraments to the people living along the tracks. This is a story of America's history, a story of the railroads, a story of amazing grace and faith. There were three Episcopal cars: The Cathedral Car of North Dakota, and the two chapel cars of Upper Michigan; seven American Baptist Publication Society cars: Evangel, Emmanuel, Glad Tidings, Good Will, Messenger of Peace, Herald of Hope, and Grace; and three Catholic Extension Society cars: St. Anthony, St. Peter, and St. Paul.

Pioneer Zephyr
This online exhibit is based on the new Pioneer Zephyr exhibit, "All Aboard the Silver Streak", at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. When the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad set out to revolutionize passenger rail service, they wanted a train the likes of which no one had ever seen before. The result - the first diesel-electric streamlined train in passenger service - sparked more than just speedy and lucrative travel. The shape and design of the Zephyr influenced everything from transportation to toasters.
