American Experience: Streamliners (PBS)
Ed Pick
Using beautiful period footage and photographs -- some of which have been held in private collections and never viewed by the public -- and interviews with the men and women who rode and worked on the rails, Streamliners uncovers the dramatic story of the rise and fall of an American passenger rail system that was the envy of the world. The film paints a vivid portrait of the men whose creativity and determination produced the streamliner, chronicles the tremendous impact the trains had on the U.S. during the 1930s, and explores the reasons why postwar America turned its back on the world's best passenger rail system. This site features info on the film, including a transcription and resources, additional features, interviews with the director, a photo gallery, people and events and other items related to the story of Streamliners in America. The Time Machine: A Strasburg Railroad Photoessay
Ed Pick
To ride a preserved steam railroad is to travel through time. Aboard the steam cars, one can turn back the clock and experience again the sights and sounds of a less hectic age. The creak of wooden floorboards, the smell of cinders, the pant of the steam locomotive-- these were the sensations of daily life in our great-grandparents' day. To recreate them for those of us too young to have known them first hand is railway preservation's privilege and high calling. Valve Gear on the Computer

In 1986, Charlie Dockstader wrote the first version of software to simulate various types of valve gear. Since then, he has made continuous additions and improvements to add other types of valve gear and improve functionality and ease of use. The programs can be used with the default settings to view operation and characteristics of any of the types of valve gear supported. They may also be used to check or change valve gear designs as all the variables in the gear can be modified. Some types of valve gear also include a design section. Performance for all types can be viewed using several different types of diagrams. Golden Rail Video

"Videos worth a second look." The steam locomotive is captured in unusual circumstances in this special series of productions. Finely detailed narrative, story, and action. ("The Rock Trains" includes a rare cab ride in an increasingly cantankerous Climax logging locomotive.) Both NTSC & PAL formats. RailroadPix.com Railcam Gallery
Ed Pick
RailroadPix.com has created a Railcam preview gallery to help you locate the railroad webcams that interest you. We've captured a still image (not live) from each of the most popular railcams. The preview images, along with hit counts and viewer ratings, help you determine which cams are of interest to you. No more wondering what the cam looks like during daylight hours, or if there is ever a train on that line. Quickly and easily locate the cams you want to see! View of several passenger lines. The camera features streaming video and is user controllable. Several lines can be seen, depending on camera orientation. This is a new camera, in a different location than the previous Nagoya cam. I'm not certain of the camera's new location (is it still in Nagoya?) or train frequency, so corrections and updates are welcome. This truly incredible cam has a view from the cab of a locomotive! Always wanted to travel the railroads of Switzerland with its dense track layout and service as well as it's great Alpine views? Well now you can through the Swiss locomotive rail cam. A digital camera is mounted in the cab of an electric locomotive. This camera takes "snapshots" every so often and then sends them via a wireless data link back to this web site. The views, which are updated several times a day, show the track ahead as well as other passing trains, stations, the shops where the locomotive is maintained and those Alpine views. A nice sharp image, excellent views with a new snapshot roughly every 15 minutes or so. Railway and Tram are crossing the river Elbe. An excellent shot of a busy 4 track railway line crossing the river in a sweeping "S" curve. Lots of activity on this line, with many passenger trains. Rochelle, IL - In cooperation with the City of Rochelle, Illinois, we present the TRAINS Rochelle Webcam, where nearly a hundred trains may be seen in any 24-hour period. Our camera is mounted facing west at the Rochelle Railroad Park. Union Pacific's former C&NW Chicago - Omaha main line is seen in the foreground on the right, while Burlington Northern Santa Fe's former BN Chicago - Twin Cities line is at left. Both double-track lines cross at the center of the picture. Streaming video with a very fast refresh rate, lots of traffic, two Class I railroads and 4 tracks, this is an excellent Railcam. A great place for some virtual train watching! Lacey (Olympia), WA - Centennial Station is the Amtrak stop for Olympia and Lacey Washington. The station is located on the active Cascades corridor between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon and is serviced by 8 Amtrak trains daily. The double track line is owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) and can host up to 20 freight trains per day. In addition, Union Pacific (UP) has trackage rights on the line and runs an additional 10 to 20 freight trains per day. The totals from the 3 railroads can be as many as 40-50 trains per day. With a very active double track mainline and Railcam shots for the last 4 trains to pass in each direction, this camera gives an excellent view of BNSF and UP in the Pacific Northwest. Now if they would only install streaming video...
