Train Sights On – Musings on Railroad Photography Ed Pick
Musings on railroad photography (and lots of wonderful photos) by Eric Williams.

I’m Eric Williams, a photographer who also happens to be a designer and creative director. I’m fascinated by railroads, whether they are active, historical or in our cultural imagination. This interest developed in my childhood, has been with me for as long as I can remember and it continues to be my favorite subject matter.

While most photographers of railroads take a documentative approach, I‘m interested in pursuing a subjective and emotional response and push the genre of railroad photography into the realm of fine art photography.

This blog explores my thoughts, observations and ideas on my journey to becoming a better photographer. Writing helps me clarify my thoughts and hopefully these will resonate with other photographers.

Narrow Gauge

Great Little Trains of Wales Ed Pick
The Great Little Trains of Wales are a very special way of seeing some of the best scenery in the British Isles. All are narrow gauge steam railways and some have a history spanning well over 100 years. All of them have in common the charm of old-time steam trains with plenty of polished paintwork and brass.

Built in a time less hasty than our own, most originally served to carry Welsh slate from the quarries to the sea. However, no two are the same and they all offer a unique experience of a bygone era.The special attraction of narrow gauge railways lies in their modest size compared with the main line ones and their leisurely speed gives time to take in some of the splendid scenery. Why not take a Virtual Tour of Wales and its narrow gauge railways.

Passenger Trains

American Experience: Streamliners (PBS) Ed Pick
Using beautiful period footage and photographs -- some of which have been held in private collections and never viewed by the public -- and interviews with the men and women who rode and worked on the rails, Streamliners uncovers the dramatic story of the rise and fall of an American passenger rail system that was the envy of the world. The film paints a vivid portrait of the men whose creativity and determination produced the streamliner, chronicles the tremendous impact the trains had on the U.S. during the 1930s, and explores the reasons why postwar America turned its back on the world's best passenger rail system.

This site features info on the film, including a transcription and resources, additional features, interviews with the director, a photo gallery, people and events and other items related to the story of Streamliners in America.

SteamPhotos.com Ed Pick
Welcome to SteamPhotos.com!

Steam Railroad Photography by Christopher Muller. Although steam locomotives all but disappeared from regular service on North American railroads by 1960, there are approximately 300 operational steam engines in the U.S. today. Some operate daily at tourist railroads and theme parks. Others make less frequent appearances for private charters, holiday trains, community festivals, and corporate events.

A lifelong train enthusiast, my interest in railroad photography began in 2005. Today, I photograph unique railroad events and historic sites, documenting my travels here at SteamPhotos.com. Whether you're an historian, photographer, railfan, or travel enthusiast, I hope you enjoy the scenic beauty and historical significance of steam railroading as portrayed in these photos.

I offer a range of prints and calendars for purchase through this site. Profits are donated to organizations committed to historic railroad preservation including those listed below. High-resolution digital photos are also available for license. Please see the Prints & Gifts Page for details. A number of my photos presented here have appeared in books, magazines, newsletters, calendars, maps, timetables, advertising, video games, and murals.

New Mexico, Chama - Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR Webcams Pop Hot! Ed Pick
Chama, NM - The remote mountain village of Chama, New Mexico is the western terminus of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Chama was once a Division Point on the Denver & Rio Grande Western's "San Juan Extension" that ran from Alamosa, Colorado through northern New Mexico to Durango, Colorado. Today, the segment between Chama and Antonito, Colorado has been preserved as the Cumbres & Toltec. This 65-mile-long museum traverses some of the most strikingly beautiful and isolated mountain wilderness on the planet. The railroad yard in Chama boasts the largest collection of Rio Grande railroad equipment in existence. There are usually five or six of the railroad's ten steam locomotives in the yard with one or two under steam.

From the south-facing camera you will be able to see locomotives being readied at the Engine House, cars being switched in the yard, and trains being loaded at the Depot. The north-facing camera affords views of locomotives taking water at the double-spouted tank and getting coal from a front-end loader. Look for deer at dusk and dawn each day. The Depot camera offers an up-close-and-personal view of the equipment and century-old Rio Grande Depot. Tune in each morning for a spectacular Chama sunrise.

Entering Chama is like taking a step back in time to the 1950's when the railroad still operated as a common carrier. In fact, the D&RGW was the last Class I railroad in the country to run steam in regular service. The line was shut down in 1968, but was saved by a dedicated group of volunteers and the states of Colorado and New Mexico. Through decades of hard work and many close calls, the railroad has become one this country's premier historic properties.

Software : Simulations

Valve Gear on the Computer Ed Pick
In 1986, Charlie Dockstader wrote the first version of software to simulate various types of valve gear. Since then, he has made continuous additions and improvements to add other types of valve gear and improve functionality and ease of use. The programs can be used with the default settings to view operation and characteristics of any of the types of valve gear supported. They may also be used to check or change valve gear designs as all the variables in the gear can be modified. Some types of valve gear also include a design section. Performance for all types can be viewed using several different types of diagrams.

America on the Move highlights the Smithsonian’s unparalleled and extremely popular transportation collections in new and creative ways. Using multimedia technology, immersive environments, and other theatrical techniques, America on the Move brings ships, trains, trucks, and automobiles back to life—or, more accurately, back to history. See these artifacts as they once were: moving people and products from place to place, a vital part of the nation’s transportation system, a vital part of our business, social, and cultural history.

This major exhibition examines how transportation—from 1876 to 1999—has shaped our American identity from a mostly rural nation into a major economic power, forged a sense of national unity, delivered consumer abundance, and encouraged a degree of social and economic mobility unlike that of any other nation of the world.
