Rivers of Steel Heritage Area
The Rivers of Steel program builds on the inspiring vision presented in the Steel Industry Heritage Concept Plan, published in 1993. The program described here seeks to preserve and celebrate the story of Big Steel and its related industries. For nearly a century, southwestern Pennsylvania was the powerful hub of this modern industrial epic - one that propelled our nation to world leadership as an industrial giant.
Today, the region presents an incomparable opportunity to explore this multifaceted heritage and to open it to tourists and other visitors.

Southern Pacific Caboose #1353
Our plan is to return the 1353 to its as retired (1973) condition. We’ll try as often as possible to preserve the car intact. Other aspects will require restoration. The 1353 will have a historically accurate interior, with a few (a very few) subtle changes to allow some modern utility. The interior will be outfitted with period era SP artifacts.

Surviving Steam Photo Archive
The purpose of this site is to show current photographs of surviving steam locomotives around the
country. While any steam locomotive can be included here, as the URL suggests the emphasis is on
"park engines", those engines displayed outdoors in city parks, in widely varying states of repair.
I'd also like to focus on engines that exist outside of preservation, in storage or in some cases even in
scrapyards!

The Merci Train - French 40 & 8 Boxcars
The Merci Train was a train of 49 French railroad box cars filled with tens of thousands of gifts of gratitude from at least that many individual French citizens. They were showing their appreciation for the more than 700 American box cars of relief goods sent to them by (primarily) individual Americans in 1948. The Merci Train arrived in New York harbor on February 3rd, 1949 and each of the 48 American states at that time received one of the gift laden box cars. The 49th box car was shared by Washington D.C. and the Territory of Hawaii.
