Galesburg & Great Eastern Railroad
The Galesburg & Great Eastern was a railroad that operated in Knox County, Illinois in the United States. Knox
County is located in western Illinois, about 180 miles southwest from Chicago. This interesting railroad ran until
the early 1960's, hauling coal from a mine located at Victoria, Illinois to Wataga, Illinois, a distance of ten miles
(16 kilometers). Although early plans indicated that the road would extend on to Galesburg (a major railroad
center nine miles away), ultimately, the railroad would go there in name only.

Great Northern Empire
Much of the history of the Great Northern Railway is still around. Many structures are still in use, some altered to fit new purposes, lots of rolling stock has escaped repainting and some engines are on display at former Great Northern served towns and many miles of track are still serving the railroads of today.
This website shows what I found on my discovery trips with the purpose of sharing it with other fans of the Great Northern Railway and to provide an easy source for information to help explore the old Great Northern lines yourself.

The 'Hulett,' a highly efficient ore unloading machine unique to the Great Lakes, was invented by Clevelander George Hulett in 1898. Over 75 Huletts were built, revolutionizing ore shipping. These Cleveland Huletts [photograph on postcard], electrically-powered with 17-ton capacity buckets, standing some 10 stories tall and weighing in at 880 tons, were built in 1912, and unloaded ore boats continuously until 1992.
