Australia - Katoomba Scenic Railway - Blue Mountains Australia
It was built in 1879 to service a coal mine in the Jamison Valley. Over the years the railway was also used to convey coal and shale from the 'Ruined Castle' area and Megalong Valley.
Today the Scenic Railway is the world's steepest incline railway and conveys more than 850,000 passengers a year.
The funicular railway line descends through sandstone cliffs, via a rock tunnel beside Orphan Rock, then emerges to spectacular views and lush fern-filled rainforest.
It consists of a unique ride through a tunnel in the side of the mountain and descends
415 metres at a maximum grade of 52 degrees passing an ancient rainforest area
before reaching the Jamison Valley.

Belgrave, near Melbourne, Australia - Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. An historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district it was built to serve at the turn of the century. Australia - Walhalla Goldfields Railway
Walhalla, Australia - A ride on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway is an unforgettable experience. As the train leaves Thomson Station, it crosses the historic and spectacular Thomson River Bridge and then travels over the winding and rising line towards Walhalla. This journey offers wonderful views of Stringer's Creek as it meanders down to the Thomson River.
As you pass vertical cliff faces and travel through narrow cuttings you will come to appreciate the effort needed to carve this line through such rugged and challenging country - a truly amazing engineering feat!
Glancing down into Stringer's Creek Gorge you will notice that much of the line is constructed on a ledge edged by dry stone walls, still serving their purpose nearly one hundred years after placement.

Australia - Walhalla Goldfields Railway
Victoria, Australia - Walhalla Goldfields Railway. Travel on Victoria's most spectacular railway which now takes you on a journey along the Stringer's Creek Gorge form Thomson through to Walhalla.
The Moe to Walhalla railway was one of four
experimental narrow gauge routes constructed
early this century by the Victorian Railways to
develop isolated districts where conventional
broad gauge lines would incur prohibitive
construction costs. The railway operated to Walhalla until 1944, and the final section from Erica to Moe closed in 1954. The entire
line was eventually dismantled between 1958 and 1962.
There was nothing left (apart from derelict bridges) of the original railway so everything has been rebuilt from the
ground up since 1993. Tracks points, buildings....everything ! In April 1994 the Walhalla Goldfields Railway was
officially opened and trains started running again within station limits at Thomson.
