Pennsylvania - Wanamaker Kempton & Southern
The WK&S Railroad is located in Kempton, PA in scenic Berks County. Known as the "Hawk Mountain Line" because of its' proximity to the famous bird sanctuary, the WK&S has been open since 1963. Train rides are offered on weekends from May through October, with special events throughout the year, including a Santa Special weekend in December. Private charters can be arranged at any time, and educational school trips are held on two Fridays in May.
The WK&S strives to appeal to familys, although children of all ages will enjoy their visit to Kempton and the WK&S. The station facilities at Kempton include a large free parking area, a gift shop with many railroad-related items, refreshment stand, waiting room, restrooms, and a large picnic area. There are large grassy areas for the kids to run around, and the quiet rural setting adds to the quaint old-time atmosphere. An HO model train display run by the Schuylkill & Lehigh Model Railroad Club is also open to the public on Sundays.
