Germany - Deutsches Museum
The Deutsches Museum is one of the biggest museums of technology and science in the world. It is not a state museum but an independent public institution. Under the terms of its constitution it has the right of self administration and functions under the protection and supervision of the Bavarian state government. 18 original locomotives, among them the legendary Bavarian express steam locomotive S 3/6 or the first diesel locomotive with hydrodynamic power transmission V140 are on display: Milestones in the history of railway traffic - the first magnetic levitation train can be found, too. Additionally a large number of exhibits e.g. dealing with technical details of locomotives, track engineering or signalling and track safety can be found.

With over 4,500 exhibits the Land Transport collections are among the largest, most valuable, and oldest of the Deutsches Museum collections. They are divided thematically into Railways with many objects related to the history and development of the railway and urban rail traffic and into Transport with a collection of motor vehicles and bicycles as well as pre-industrial modes of transport such as horse-drawn carriages.

The foundation of the collections is 500 fully-functioning vehicles ranging from the large steam engine to a child's scooter and numerous pieces that document the infrastructures required for transport and traffic. There is also a collection of mobile sports equipment, such as skis, ice skates and roller skates, in addition to carrying and transport aids of all kinds, including chests and baggage. Technical components, accessories, fittings, and various model collections round off the holdings.

Germany - Saxon Steam
Steam railroads - a truly Saxon experience
The Saxons have always been known as ingenious for their spirit of invention in the areas of industry and technology. 1839 was the year in which the first long-distance railroad in Germany began operating - between Leipzig and Dresden. The ‘Saxonia' puffed her way along the 71-mile track and entered the annals of history as the first German-built steam locomotive.

Today, there are still more narrow-gauge steam trains running in Saxony than anywhere else in Germany. This website invites you to experience these nostalgic trains in a unique landscape. And there are a host of other sights to see along the tracks.
